A. PUTNAM MALLETS
ABOUT BAMBOO

A PUTNAM MALLETS uses only the finest Tonkin bamboo handles, which are hand selected for superior balance, weight and sound. This species of bamboo, grown in southeast Asia, thrives in warm, humid environments. The tonkin species has a thick, outer wall and is the strongest and most dense available. Bamboo, being a natural material, is susceptible to climatic conditions and changes. Dryness and cold temperatures may cause the material to shrink and possibly crack.

Steps that can be taken to avoid cracking in dry climates:

• Keep the mallets in a consistent, warm environment (55-80F), avoiding drastic changes.

• Do not leave outside when temperatures are below 40F.

• During dry or freezing weather, it is best to keep the bamboo sealed in the plastic bag in which they are packaged.

• In extremely dry conditions, store bamboo in a sealed plastic container (outside of the bag) along with a damp sponge. Keep the heads away from direct contact with the sponge. Check the handles weekly and keep sponge damp. If mildew begins to form, remove sponge, wipe the handles, and place mallets in a sealed plastic bag without the sponge.

• In dry weather, soak the mallet butt-ends in water for up to 3 minutes.

• Handles that are sealed with a wood finish or oil are well-protected from mild climate changes. Wiping them down with a wet rag will likely not affect the moisture content since this finish provides a moisture barrier. Allowing the bamboo to obtain moisture from the surrounding air is the best way to keep them from cracking.

While it is impossible to completely avoid bamboo from cracking in extremely dry conditions, these measures will help preserve the handle’s moisture content and greatly reduce their risk. Handles where the finish is worn off should be refinished to reduce their risk of fracturing. Bamboo handles that have a fracture cannot be repaired or restored to their original playing condition.
